I want to hunt small game with an air pistol. First of all, can this be done ethically & humanely? If so, what make/model/caliber & ammo would you recommend? Also, should I use a scope or other optics? Please offer your recommendations on this as well. Thanks.

Dave,
Airgun hunting with a pistol is indeed a challenge. It can be done ethically if you remember to keep your range down to a distance you can hit the killzone at least 80% of the time. For most small game, that is a 1" circle. So, at whatever range you can hit a 1" circle, you can shoot at that distance providing your gun has enough power.
I would recommend the Crosman 2240 for a good starter pistol for hunting. It has reasonable power levels and accuracy. I have heard rumors from the Crosman fans that Crosman is working on a PCP-based pistol in the not too distant future. I have no other info other than what I've sniffed at on-line, so it may be awhile.
Another good pistol to consider is the 1377. It isn't temperature sensitive like the CO2-powered 2240, and the accuracy is quite good. Pump it up 10 times for long shots, less for closer range stuff or small birds.
Optics are up to you....whatever you desire. I like red-dot scopes for pistols, myself.
Pellets....use the most accurate in your gun. Accuracy is king.
